Στους δυο μήνες περίπου που έχω να ανανεώσω το blog μου, το καλοκαίρι έγινε βαρύ φθινόπωρο, η δουλειά μου αυξήθηκε, ο μισθός μου έμεινε ο ίδιος. Στο μεταξύ πρόλαβα να καταστρώσω ένα μεγαλόπνοο σχέδιο για φεστιβάλ στη Χαλκιδική, να συζητήσω με διάφορους ανευθυνοϋπεύθυνους, και στο τέλος να το ναυαγήσω αύτανδρο. Βλέπετε οι φράσεις "Που πας ρε Καραμήτρο" και "Που πας ξυπόλητη στ'αγκάθια" στάθηκαν αρκετές να με αποτρέψουν από την Δονκιχωτική στάση που έχω από τη φύση μου απέναντι στα πράγματα. Δύσκολες εποχές για ρομαντικούς... Άραγε να περιμένω να γίνουν οι εποχές εύκολες, ή να πάρω φόρα και να χτυπήσω με το κεφάλι στους τοίχους που με περιορίζουν; Ιδού η απορία.

Η Liz Christine απαντά...

σε ένα ερωτηματολόγιο που - να λέμε την αλήθεια- ξεπατίκωσα απο το περιοδικό Uncut. Είναι ουσιαστικά η αρχή μερικών φράσεων τις οποίες συμπληρώνει ο καλλιτέχνης που επιλέγω κάθε φορά. Είναι νομίζω πολύ πιο ενδιαφέρον για τον αναγνώστη από μια συνέντευξη παλιού τύπου του στύλ: "Πότε ξεκίνησες την ενασχόληση σου με το τραγούδι;"
Αφήστε, που αναγκαστικά απαντάνε σε ερωτήσεις ουσίας και με αυτό το τρόπο μαθαίνουμε τι έχει στο κεφάλι του ο κάθε καλλιτέχνης!

Αυτή τη φορά κάλεσα να "παίξουμε" τη Liz Christine απο τη Βραζιλία, η οποία είναι ένα κορίτσι που αγαπά τα κορίτσια.

Chatting with Kevin McAdams


I discovered the Elefant rather late. I admit it. But who can tell when it’s too late or too soon? And why is it late when it comes to music? Anyway, I always believed in what people call the right timing. Every single band came into my life when it should. And left the same way. It has happened many times. The same with Elefant. Obviously their light, their glamour, the 70’s feel, their sassiness and their melodic pop tunes had to be on hold for a little longer. Until last April. Upbeat songs, wild on stage plus a sexy front man who reminds me a lot of the icons we worshiped when we were little, like Mark Bolan, Iggy, Robert Plant. Need something more? A new album perhaps? Cooomiiiiing……


Kevin’s solo album
I'd say the record consists of energetic melodic pop tunes with twists and turns from both the instruments and lyrics.
The melodies can be sunny at times. The lyrics add the edge, but I like to leave plenty of room for interpretation, allowing the songs to take on a life of their own for anyone listening.

On the title of the solo album (Its Time to Lose my Mind)
It's always time, "to lose your mind". Basically, if you think for yourself, you're defined as crazy. Nothing scares people more than folks who think for themselves.

Music on line and musician’s tasks

Definitely, it's more work, but more rewarding. It depends on what you're looking to get out of it? I am very particular about every decision related to my music, so for me it's ideal.

Quite honestly, though, given the industry, most musicians really don't have a choice. You have to use both sides of your brain. Overall, I think it's good because it forces musicians to take ownership.

Influences
Everything comes full circle. My earliest music memories affect me most today. Old Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, ELO, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and the list goes on. Lots of late-60's/70's melodic rock. On a sidenote, I played a lot of speed metal as a teenager. For me, that style of music is all about taking chances and trying new things for the sake of it. I still love that mindset.

Multitasking on projects, new album with Elefant. Too much to do
It sounds like more than it is. These projects are not active 100% of the time, so when one project gets quiet another one picks up. It's a fun way to enjoy music and stay sharp.

Typical day of Kevin’s life
I can't really say. It changes daily, which for me is great. I will say I think it's extremely important to get up from your desk or computer and get outside, even if for 5 minutes. People and weather never go out of style.

New York and “Sex and the City”. Beautiful women, alcohol, drugs, fast relationships, fashion. True or false?
Sure, there's plenty of truth there, that's part of the attraction. Overall, I can't say the effects of "Sex and the City" and
"Tabloid/Reality" have been good for culture and the arts. Everything gets pre-packaged and watered down. There are cycles in anything, though, so I am hopeful.

Sex, drugs, rock’n’roll
Everyone loves a good myth. Keith Richards is practically immortal. It's amazing. However you get from one day to the next is a triumph.

Inspiration
My inspiration is the subtle glory and pitfalls of everyday life. We're funny creatures and life is short. You can make a point without taking everything too seriously.

Politics
I like to vote, but I don't wave a flag for any particular ideology. I can't say I'm a fan of organized fun. Some of my songs are protest songs, but they're not about a specific war or event. They're about more subtle everyday things. Seinfeld Protest music, if you like.


Does Diego still think he’s Iggy Pop?
I hope so. Our pre-Sunlight shows were pretty insane. We should go back to that. I can't think of a better frontman to emulate than Iggy. Pure energy in human form.


Third Elefant album. Touring. Is Greece included?
Yes, Greece is beautiful! Let's make it happen.

At this point, I am guessing sometime in early 2010? I would say any touring would start around the release of the record.

Growing old
I refuse to age gracefully, but wisdom comes in handy.

First things first. I wake up with the
… thought of coffee. There really isn't a good enough reason to get out of bed. It's a pretty great place. John Lennon was right. Stay in bed!

I admire
… bands who know when to breakup. The Beatles and The Clash, arguably the two best bands of all time. Maybe we'll get it right someday?

Best crowd ever. Live performances or rehearsals?
We've had some really fun shows in Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Buenos Aires. Playing live is great, and so is making records. A healthy balance is ideal.

If my life was a movie it would be….
..ideally, Trading Places, especially the end.

Cut City Interview

Κλειστοφοβικά συναισθήματα, πόνος, έρωτας, διαστροφή… Όλα αυτά σκεπασμένα από το Σκανδιναβικό λυκόφως. Αλλά και μελωδία. Και αρμονία. Οι Cut City αφηγούνται ιστορίες που ακούγονται σαν σωματικά υγρά που ρέουν, ιστορίες σκληρές και βίαιες, ιστορίες για αυτούς που έχουν γερό στομάχι. Η μουσική τους είναι ένα συνονθύλευμα από πανκ στοιχεία, με σαφείς αναφορές στην 80’s pop ευαισθησία. Είναι με λίγα λόγια ένας ήχος οικείος και καινούριος ταυτόχρονα. Οικείος γιατί μεγάλωσα με το dark wave να συνοδεύει την εφηβεία και το ρίμελ μου και καινούριος γιατί είμαι μεγάλη πια και η απόσταση από εκείνα τα χρόνια είναι αυτή του χάσματος. Ιδού η συζήτηση μου μαζί τους. God bless MySpace!!

- Μπορείτε να περιγράψετε τον ήχο της μουσικής σας αλλά και την αίσθηση που αφήνει;

Οι ήχοι που παράγουμε είναι οι φανταστικοί ήχοι σωματικών υγρών, επιθετικών καταστάσεων, group sex, κατάχρησης αλκοόλ και ναρκωτικών, σκύλευσης οικογενειακών τάφων. Το συναίσθημα που αποκομίζει κάποιος είναι επώδυνο και δεν είναι για τους λιπόψυχους.

- Δεν έχετε υπογράψει κανένα παχυλό συμβόλαιο με μεγάλη δισκογραφική, σωστά; Αυτό σημαίνει ότι πρέπει να πουλάτε μόνοι σας τη μουσική σας. Νομίζετε ότι η δουλειά του μουσικού εμπεριέχει και τέτοιου είδους καθήκοντα;

Max: Κι όμως υπογράψαμε ένα παχυλό συμβόλαιο με έναν καλό φίλο μας ο οποίος θα πρέπει να είναι ο πιο συμπονετικός άνθρωπος στο κόσμο. Προσπάθησε να πουλήσει τη μουσική μας και χρεοκόπησε προσπαθώντας. Είναι ανάμεσα στα καθήκοντα μας να κάνουμε γνωστή τη μουσική μας και μοιραζόμαστε τη «λάντζα». Δεν φοβόμαστε να βρωμίσουμε τα ήδη βρώμικα χέρια μας.

Oskar: Ναι, έχεις δίκιο, όμως την ίδια στιγμή σημαίνει και ότι έχουμε τον πλήρη έλεγχο πάνω στο ποια τραγούδια κυκλοφορούμε και αυτό σίγουρα είναι μέσα στα καθήκοντα του μουσικού. Μακριά τα (παχουλά) αφεντικά των δισκογραφικών. Η τελευταία μας δουλειά πάντως είναι με την GSL η οποία μας παραχώρησε πλήρη καλλιτεχνική ελευθερία.

- Ποιοι καλλιτέχνες σας επηρέασαν στην εφηβεία σας;

Max: Καθώς μεγάλωνα άκουγα Bon Jovi, Guns NRoses, Poison, The Cult, Metallica, Black Flag, Ramones, Helix ή οτιδήποτε άλλο μου έδινε σε κασέτα ο ξάδελφος μου. Δεν αγόρασα κανένα δίσκο μέχρι που έγινα δεκαοχτώ και δεν πήγα σε συναυλία παρά μόνο το1992 για να δω τους Metallica. Όλες αυτές οι μπάντες (με εξαίρεση τους Helix) γύρισαν πίσω για να με στοιχειώσουν με διάφορους τρόπους, θετικούς και αρνητικούς.

Oskar: Απίστευτος αριθμών συγκροτημάτων, όμως ιδιαίτερα πανκ μπάντες της Δυτικής Ακτής όπως οι Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Husker Du (όχι από τη Δυτική Ακτή, όμως σίγουρα ναι) Descendents κ.λ.π. Μπορεί να ακουστεί σαν κλισέ όμως το κίνημα του πανκ άλλαξε δραματικά τον τρόπο με τον οποίο έβλεπα τα πράγματα μέχρι εκείνη τη στιγμή. Και το ίδιο εξακολουθεί να κάνει. Κατά κάποιο τρόπο.

Magnus: Kiss, Metallica, Journey

- Θα μπορούσατε να περιγράψετε μια τυπική μέρα της ζωής σας;

Max: Ξυπνάω με τον ήχο του“More Than A Feeling” των Boston. Πηγαίνω για τρέξιμο με το Subdivisions (Rush) στα ακουστικά του άχρηστου κινητού μου. Καταλήγω στη δουλειά με τοSeparate Waysτων Journey. Dont Fear The Reaper” στη διάρκεια του διαλείμματος και “I Hate My Fucking Job” από τους MOTO στα απομεινάρια της εργάσιμης ημέρας. “Freebird” καθώς γυρίζω σπίτι με το μηχανάκι. Το soundtrack του βραδινού φαγητού τελειώνει με το “Sex Bomb” από Flipper και βάζω λίγη ambience να παίζει καθώς βλέπω συγχρόνως TV, από τους Black Flag. “Stench of Prophet” από τους Brutal Truth είναι το νανούρισμα μου.
Oskar: Ξυπνάω. Φτιάχνω πρωινό. Πηγαίνω τη κόρη μου στο παιδικό σταθμό. Δουλεύω. Τρώω. Κοιμάμαι.

Magnus: Δουλειά, δείπνο, TV.. Και αυτό είναι όλο.

- Ζείτε το μύθο του sex, drugs, rocknroll ; Αν όχι, γιατί.

Max: Ναι.

Magnus: Όχι. Γιατί τα περισσότερα ναρκωτικά είναι χάλια..

- Τι σας εμπνέει; Ποια είναι η θεματολογία των τραγουδιών σας;

Max: Όλα τα συναισθήματα και οτιδήποτε οι αισθήσεις μας καταγράφουν αποτυπώνονται σε μικρά σημειώματα post-it και μεταμορφώνονται σε στίχους που μπορεί να καταλήξουν σε κάτι απτό, ή μπορεί και όχι. Αγαπώ τις λέξεις και είναι απίστευτα σημαντικές για μένα όμως γενικά δεν έχω κάτι συγκεκριμένο στο μυαλό μου όταν γράφω. Το περισσότερο καιρό κάτι γίνεται χειροπιαστό μετά από μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα και για αυτό νιώθω και μεγάλη ανταμοιβή.

Magnus: Η μουσική από μόνη της.

- Είστε πολιτικοποιημένοι; Σας αρέσουν τα τραγούδια διαμαρτυρίας;

Max: Μου αρέσει το ‘One In A Million‘ από τους GNR αν και οι στίχοι είναι απαίσιοι. Είναι ένα τραγούδι διαμαρτυρίας κατά κάποιο τρόπο και παρόλο που δεν μπορώ να ταυτιστώ με τους στίχους, η αίσθηση του «μπουχτίσματος» που εκπέμπει μου ταιριάζει.

Oskar: Δεν είμαι πολιτικοποιημένος όμως μ’αρέσουν τα τραγούδια διαμαρτυρίας. Έτσι κι αλλιώς εύκολα παίρνω φωτιά. Κάποτε, ακούγοντας το Nazi punks fuck off από τους Dead Kennedys, έριξα ένα μπουκάλι σε έναν skinhead. Και το τραγούδι δε μιλάει καν για τους Nazi.

Magnus: Όχι, δεν είμαι πολιτικοποιημένος. Όμως ένα τραγούδι ανεξάρτητα από το αν είναι διαμαρτυρίας ή όχι, αν είναι καλό, είναι πάντα ευπρόσδεκτο.

Σκοπεύετε να έρθετε στην Ελλάδα; Θα κάνετε συναυλίες σε άλλες χώρες;

Max: Θα ξεκινήσουμε τη περιοδεία μας το φθινόπωρο και θα έρθουμε στην Ελλάδα αν κάποιος φιλοτιμηθεί να πληρώσει το γελοίο ποσό που χρειάζεται για να φτάσουμε εκεί.

Magnus: Το ελπίζω. Το ελπίζω.

Πως νιώθετε καθώς μεγαλώνετε; Πιο ευτυχισμένοι, πιο σοφοί, πιο ασφαλείς;

Max: Πιο λυπημένοι, πιο ηλίθιοι και γενικά ανασφαλείς.

Τι σας κάνει να σηκώνεστε το πρωί από το κρεβάτι;

Max: Ο καφές.

Magnus: Συνήθως η δουλειά και καμιά φορά τα παιδιά.

Ποιες σύγχρονες μπάντες/καλλιτέχνες θαυμάζετε; Γιατί;

Max: Black Dice, No Age, Fucked Up, We Live In Trenches, Health… Η λίστα συνεχίζεται δίχως τέλος.

Oskar: Αυτή τη στιγμή οι Battles. Γιατί; Επειδή είναι πραγματικά πολύ δύσκολο να είσαι πρωτότυπος στη μουσική αυτό τον καιρό.

Σε ποιες χώρες σας αρέσει να παίζετε περισσότερο; Προτιμάτε τις ζωντανές εμφανίσεις ή τις ώρες στο studio;

Magnus: Η Γαλλία μας έχει δεχτεί πολύ καλά. Οι συναυλίες και το studio είναι τόσο διαφορετικά μεταξύ τους και κατά συνέπεια δε ξέρω ποιό προτιμώ περισσότερο.

Αν η ζωή σου ήταν ταινία, ποια θα ήταν αυτή;

Max: Δε θα ήταν καλή ιδέα.

Oskar: Groundhog Day (Η Μέρα της Μαρμότας)

Κάποια βιβλία που έχετε να προτείνετε;

Max: Gore των Black Dice και Jason Frank Rothenberg

Πως φαντάζεστε τον εαυτό σας μετά από 10 χρόνια;

Max: Γεμάτο ρυτίδες αλλά πάντα με αγορίστικη χάρη.

Magnus: Πάνω- κάτω όχι πολύ διαφορετικό από τώρα.

update: Below is our conversation in English, as the band requested. Here it goes:



Suffocating feelings, pain, love, perversion Under the veil of the Scandinavian twilight. But also melody. And harmony. Cut City tell us stories that sound like body fluids leaking, stories of cruelty and violence, stories for people with a stomach made of steel. Their music is a mixture of punk elements, draining directly from the great big source called pop sensitivity of the ‘80s. In other words it’s all about a sound that is so familiar and new at the same time. Familiar as something very close to you, a dark feeling maybe you grew up with, a pain that follows you through the years but also new because everyday a new touch is added.



Can you define what your music sounds like and the feel of it ?


The sounds we produce is the imaginary sounds of body fluids, hostile situations, group sex, alcohol abuse, drugs and everything you ever associate with the grave pillaging of a city. The very feel of it is painful and not for the faint-hearted.

You didn’t sign a big fat contract with a major label, right? That means that you have to sell your music on your own. Do you think a musician’s job includes such “tasks”?

Max: We did sign a big fat contract with a dear friend of ours who is the most compassionate person we've ever met. He sold our music and went out of business doing so. We see getting our music out to willing people as our task and doing so we share the obstacles together.
We're not afraid of getting our dirty hands dirtier.

Oskar: Not really, but at the same time it means that we fully control all our releases which should be the musician’s job. Not (big fat) major label bosses. Our last fullest release however was on GSL who allowed us full artistic freedom.

Which artists influenced you in your adolescence?

Max: Growing up I listened to Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses, Poison, The Cult, Metallica, Black Flag, Ramones, Helix or anything my cousin would hand me a tape with. I didn't buy music until I was eighteen or so and I didn't witness a concert until 1992 when I saw Metallica. All of these bands (with the exception of Helix) have come back to haunt me in various ways, positively and negatively.

Oskar: Tons of bands really, but in particular American west coast punk bands like Dead Kennedy’s, Black Flag, Husker Du (not from the west coast, but still), Descendents etc I would say. It sounds like such a cliché but the punk movement really changed the way I viewed things when I was a kid. And still does. In some ways.

Magnus: Kiss, Metallica and all the other bay area bands, Journey

Could you describe a typical day of your every day life?

Max: Wake up to the sound of "More Than A Feeling" with Boston. Go for a jog with "Subdivisions" (Rush) streaming from my useless walkman phone. End up at work to the sound of "Separate Ways" by Journey. "Don't Fear The Reaper" during lunch break and "I Hate My Fucking Job" by MOTO during the remainder of my work hours. "Freebird" while riding my bike home. Dinner soundtrack ends up being Flipper's "Sex Bomb" and ambience while watching TV provided by Black Flag's "TV Party". "Stench of Prophet" by Brutal Truth would be my lullaby.

Oskar: Wake up. Make breakfast. Take my daughter to kindergarten. Work. Eat. Sleep.

Magnus: Work, dinner.. TV.. And that's about it..

Do you live up the sex, drugs, rock’n’roll mythology? If not, why?

Max: Yes.

Magnus: No. Cause most drugs suck.

What is your inspiration? What is the thematology of your songs?

Max: All the sentiments our senses are able to register are scribbled down on small post-it notes and transformed into lyrics that may or may not end up being intelligible. The words are very dear and incredibly important to me but generally I have no theme in mind when writing. Most of the time it makes sense after a while and is thus kind of rewarding for me too.

Magnus: Music itself

Are you politically active? Do you like “protest” songs

Max: I like 'One In A Million' by GNR even though the lyrics are horrid. It's a protest song of some sort and though I can't relate too much of the lyrics I can relate to the sentiment of being fed-up.

Oskar: I'm not politically active but I love a good protest song! Plus I'm really easily provoked. Once, listening to "Nazi punks fuck off" by Dead Kennedy’s made me throw a bottle at a skinhead. And that song isn't even about Nazis really.

Magnus: No. Not only based on it being a "protest" song, but a good song is always a good song

Are you planning on touring soon? Will you come to Greece?

Max: Touring this fall and will come to Greece if someone can pay the ridiculous sum of money we need to get there.

Magnus: Hopefully. Hopefully.


How do you feel as you grow older? Happier, wiser, safer?

Max: Sadder, dumber and generally unsafe.

What makes you get out of bed in the morning?

Max: Coffee.

Magnus: Usually work and sometimes kids.

Which current bands/artists do you admire? Why?

Max: Black Dice, No Age, Fucked Up, We Live In Trenches, Health... the list goes on and on and on.

Oskar: Right now Battles. Why? Because it's really hard to be innovative in music these days.

Which country/crowd do you prefer to play for? Do you prefer live performance to rehearsals?

Magnus: France has been very friendly to us. Playing live and rehearse are quite different and I
can't say that I prefer one over the other.

If you life was a movie, what would that be?

Max: A horrible idea.

Oskar: Groundhog Day.

Any books you want to suggest?

Max: Gore by Black Dice and Jason Frank Rothenberg

Oskar: The New York trilogy by Paul Auster. I'm sure you've read it. If not: get to it. now.

How do you picture yourself after 10 years?

Max: Wrinkled but with a boyish charm.

Interpol's Paul Banks Readies Solo Album

Οι θαυμάστριες του δέχτηκαν την είδηση με ενθουσιασμό. Ήμουν επιφυλακτική μέχρι να ακούσω τα τραγούδια του. Η γνώμη μου είναι πως η Carla Bruni γράφει καλύτερα τραγούδια. Last Days of April

Ο Απρίλης είναι ο μήνας που με μαθηματικό τρόπο μου αλλάζει τα φώτα, κάθε χρόνο χωρίς έλεος. Ο Μάιος είναι ακόμη χειρότερος. Αν δε μπει Ιούνιος κι αν δεν κάνω τη πρώτη μου βουτιά στη θάλασσα, δε νιώθω καλά.

(Άσχετο) Η Χαλκιδική είναι το πιο κιτς μέρος στο κόσμο. Αθάνατη Ελληνική Επαρχία. Έλα τώρα και πες μου εσύ πως τα βγάζεις πέρα με το φολκλόρ και τον συνταξιούχο αγρότη. Σε κάτι άλλα πάλι, είμαστε πολύ προχώ... Ειδικά τα τέκνα μας. Όμως εδώ νιώθω κατά κάποιο τρόπο ελεύθερη.

Άραγε υπάρχει κάποιο μαγικό μέρος σε αυτό το κόσμο, όπου τα όνειρα μας γίνονται πραγματικότητα;

Radio Days

To ραδιόφωνο πάντα με γοήτευε. Έχει αυτή την αμεσότητα και ζεστασιά, αν έχεις ανοιχτό το ραδιόφωνο δεν είσαι ποτέ μόνος. Σκεφτόμουν ότι θα μπορούσα να έχω μια δική μου εκπομπή, όπου θα μπορούσα να μη λέω τίποτα απολύτως και απλά να βάζω μουσικές για τους απόκληρους του indie. Είχα όμως πάντα να αντιμετωπίσω το φόβο της έκθεσης που κυριολεκτικά με παρέλυε.
Το περασμένο καλοκαίρι οι ζυμώσεις μέσα μου πήραν τέλος. Ήταν ένα περιπετειώδες ταξίδι για το οποίο ξόδεψα χρόνο, κόπο και οδύνη μερικές φορές. Το ξεσκόνισμα του εαυτού μου έλαβε τέλος. Και αποφάσισα να το γιορτάσω με μια ακόμη υπέρβαση. Σε μια αναλαμπή, την 1η Αυγούστου 2008, πέρασα το κατώφλι του Radio Star, εδώ στα Ν.Μουδανιά, και συνάντησα τον ιδιοκτήτη του, έναν άνθρωπο ευθύ, ορεξάτο και πρόθυμο να «πειραματιστεί» και να κάνει καινούρια πράγματα. Η συνεργασία ξεκίνησε το περασμένο καλοκαίρι και συνεχίζεται. Συνεχίζονται και τα άλματα. Τώρα βγαίνουμε και διαδικτυακά. Μεγαλώνει το Radio Star, μεγαλώνει και η ευθύνη μας.
Θέλω να ευχαριστήσω και από εδώ τη φοβερή και τρομερή Μαρία Παπαδημητρίου που με έμπασε σε χρόνο dt στα τοπικά «διαπλεκόμενα», και την Αναστασία Ατματζίδου που τη πρώτη μου ημέρα στον αέρα (φρίκη και δέος μαζί) δε σταμάτησε ούτε λεπτό να μου χαμογελάει ενθαρρυντικά από το τζάμι που μας χωρίζει και να μου λέει: «Ωραία, συνέχισε…».
Φυσικά η εκπομπή που κάνω λίγο μοιάζει με αυτό που είχα στο κεφάλι μου, έτσι δε γίνεται συνήθως; Δεν υπάρχουν απόκληροι του indie εδώ στη Χαλκιδική, υπάρχουν όμως άνθρωποι που διψάνε για ενημέρωση, για ένα καυστικό σχόλιο για τα τεκταινόμενα της πολιτικής, για λίγη καλή μουσική. Απλά πράγματα. Και δύσκολα.
Σας το είχα πει ότι θα σας συναντούσα ξανά στην επόμενη στροφή. Τώρα είμαστε σε αυτή τη στροφή.

April 4: Dortmund, Germany
Paul: After tonight's gig at Visions Party, the place turned into a club night. Someone gave us drink cards with 30 little circles, each corresponding to a euro. I ordered three Jägermeisters, a beer, and a gin and tonic. Despite my best attempts, I never got to 30. I went back to the hotel for a while but returned around 3:30 a.m. to see if anyone was still there. I went around the back and startled a couple having sex on a car. They were frantically pulling their pants up before I could apologize. I felt bad about it. I hope that the intrusion didn't irreparably kill the mood.
Carlos: Dortmund's audience left something to be desired in terms of enthusiasm. But they were attentive and patient, as most German audiences tend to be. It was at the after-party where the night proved itself. Some guy started buying me drinks and found some Ecstasy. You can't really do that drug after you've had vodka and beer all night, because it really doesn't do the job. Actually, I shouldn't say that, because my favorite Placebo song came on as I peaked, and I must have made an ass out of myself on the dance floor. I don't care, though, because few things in life feel better than peaking on E just as a really good song comes on when you're on a semi-crowded dance floor.

April 5: Münster, Germany
Paul: Tonight's show was in a cool little venue, but it was so mobbed that Daniel had to climb in the dressing-room window because he couldn't get from the entrance to the stage.
Carlos: Münster was crazy! We played to 200 people, and there was virtually no stage, so everyone was eye-level and right smack in front of you. I had to make sure I didn't smack anyone in the head with the headstock of my bass. There was an after-party, which looked like a lot of fun, but alas, as usual, the bus was ready to leave. People love to paint a picture of touring in a rock band as a nonstop bacchanal of unfettered partying, but they're not around when it's midnight, the bus is leaving, a pretty girl winks at you, and [Pulp's] "Common People" comes on. All you have to look forward to is a thrilling game of PlayStation 2. Can we talk about a buzz kill?

April 6: Würzburg, Germany
Carlos: One thing I saw only in Germany were these gambling hall/Internet cafés-places where you can buy crap coffee for 50 cents, blow 20 euros on second-rate computerized slot machines, hang out with grimy octogenarians, and-oh wait, yeah-check your email! All to the odoriferous splendor of stagnant air and stationary clouds of smoke. These places scare the shit out of me, not because the clerk sits behind glass, nor because the dude in the corner has one eye, but because alcohol cannot be purchased and you know everyone wants to drink real bad.

April 8: Brussels
Paul: Tonight's show was at the Ancienne Belgique. I love the city and this venue. When I walked into the backstage area, there were clean showers and a large sun-drenched common area with sofas and a kitchen. There was fresh coffee, a chef preparing breakfast for us, some copies of the International Herald Tribune, and a TV in the corner showing CNN. On the road, and especially in foreign countries, things like this really make a difference. The war was roughly at the point when the coalition was claiming to have secured Saddam International Airport, and Al-Jazeera was showing footage of Saddam walking the streets of Baghdad swarmed by loving citizens.
We've encountered a good amount of anti-American sentiment on this tour. Much more than normal. There was a journalist in Stockholm who had interviewed some of us before the show. Afterward, in the dressing room, he commented that he was surprised that we knew anything being that we were Americans. I don't recall if it was simply implied that Americans were stupid or if he outright said it, but the arrogance of it caught me off guard. I contemplated punching him in the face and throwing him out. If there's anything I detest, it's jackasses talking shit in our dressing room immediately after a gig. Both Carlos and I told him that he was a jackass. He said that he was just expressing the predominant sentiment in Sweden. I told him to get out. He didn't think I was serious. I said I was. He got up and tried to shake my hand. I didn't take it. He said, "But you know I'm writing a piece about you guys tomorrow." What an asshole. It was just the way he said it, unsolicited, with a little weasel smirk. Anyway, we just found out that he did wind up writing a really bad piece about us. I regret not having smacked him.

April 9: Amsterdam
Paul: I had resolved not to leave Amsterdam this time without going to the red-light district to pay for some ass. No, not really. I was just curious to witness regulated prostitution in the flesh. It was 2 p.m. when I got there-broad daylight and very busy. It really is strange walking down these narrow alleyways and seeing women sitting behind windows in their underwear, reading or doing their nails, waiting for a customer. I didn't stay long, as I had to get back for sound check, but the experience was worth it. I'm just glad I hadn't gone in a bad mood, because it could be a depressing thing to witness if not armed with a cheery anthropological remove.
Later that night, postshow:
Carlos: Little did I know when I woke up yesterday that I would have red lace panties hurled onstage at me mid-song. It went in slow-mo because I was like, "No way! Panties!? So this is rock'n'roll after all! I'm a man now." I almost stopped playing. I don't mean to over-aggrandize it, but wasn't this a rite of passage last time I checked? As if that weren't enough for one evening, some girls burst into our dressing room after the gig. Luckily, they were cool, so we didn't mind the unexpected company. I had popped a leftover Ecstasy as our dressing room filled up. Thanks to the company of a charming local, I was able to forget about how lame the after-party at the Paradiso was. I'm sorry, but people wearing khakis and grinding to trance music is a hideous sight.
Paul: I got stranded in the middle of Amsterdam without any money because I'd been given the wrong directions to the tour bus. I braced myself for sleeping in the street. I don't know if it was the mushrooms, but I really panicked. Eventually, a hotel employee let me make a free call from the lobby, and by the grace of God, I had the phone number of a label rep with me. She said she'd send someone, and I was very relieved. I must have looked pretty fucked-up, because the guy told me I couldn't stay in the lobby, so I went out into the snow and waited.

April 10: Den Bosch, the Netherlands
Carlos: My friend Amy and I met a dude last night who was trying to explain the unconventional way of pronouncing the name of his city, which involved a clicking noise before the "Den" part. I never even knew this city existed, much less its arcane pronunciation. Paul made a joke about how the hell are we even playing here. He was like, "Do you know how to pronounce the name of this town? It's like pscht-den-bosch! What the fuck? How the hell did we just play to 450 people in pscht-den-bosch?! Who are these people, and how do they know our record?"

April 11: Wiesbaden, Germany
Carlos: After the show tonight, we took a little outing with [opening act] British Sea Power to the local abandoned bell tower next to the club. A bunch of punks and goths had lit a huge bonfire right by our tour bus. Okay! Then we went back to the dressing room and had a nice food fight. It started as a sort of playful tossing of peanuts, but when Amy hurled an apple at our tour manager David's head, it sparked a torrent of 60 mph bread, cheese, tomato, and, of course, beer.

April 15: Florence, Italy
Carlos: It's really late, and we're traveling to Florence after playing quite a good show in Milan, at a venue called Transilvania Live. As soon as we pulled up to the club and I got a look at the gothic lettering and huge bat on the front door, I prepared myself for the onslaught of goth jokes our witty and insightful crew would make, especially when they saw the 1,000-pound candelabra, replete with hanging skulls. Sure enough, David walks in and goes, "Carlos, is your dad home? Let's party!" Our lighting guy, Lucas, chimed in with "Is that coffin over there your bed or your mom's?" This continued for close to an hour.
Paul: Transilvania Live was pretty funny. I was standing at the entrance trying to buy bat-condom souvenirs from a machine on the wall when a grown Italian man gave me a hug and a kiss and said he was very excited for the show. As I put in money to buy another one, I looked suggestively at his two lady friends, but I don't think they read it.
Carlos: After our set, the DJ announced something in Italian, and we were like, "What the hell is he saying?" because we heard "Interpol." Apparently he was announcing the fact that we would be bartending an open bar for the next 15 minutes. Um…okay.
Paul: The owner of the club dragged everyone from the band behind the bar to give free drinks to the audience. I hit up the Jägermeister pretty severely. Sam and Daniel couldn't figure out how to pull the beers and were just serving foam. There was foam everywhere. On this tour, I have had virtually no luck getting a dirty martini, and I thought that being behind a bar myself, I could make it happen. They had the vermouth, but no olives, so I was out of luck again. Why would they have olives, anyway? It's just Italy!

April 16: Bologna, Italy
Sam: Before tonight's show, I was just starting to recover from the worst fluid-depleting case of the flu ever. But the venue [the Estragon] was packed with crazed Italians, so I blocked it out and went full-on from note one only to come to a complete and abrupt stop. My right arm went stiff and numb; my fingers couldn't grip the drumstick. I didn't panic yet, but I left the stage and rushed into our dressing room thinking I was going to vomit my head off. I caught my breath and swallowed the panic and for a brief moment wondered if I was done-for good. I could hear Paul starting the next song. He didn't have a clue I wasn't behind the kit. We go into the next song, and again, the arm stiffens up. One more try. Again, stiff. I give up and walk off, tail between legs. I was taken to the hospital, which only yielded inconclusive results. The doctor thought it was a pinched nerve, but my doc in NYC thinks it was caused by a lack of potassium.

April 27: Paris
Paul: Today, we flew to L.A. so we could play the Coachella festival THE SAME NIGHT! David woke up with the vicious Butt Flu that had systematically ravaged 70 percent of our touring party. He fell asleep on the floor at the boarding gate in Paris, and Lucas placed a number of empty beer bottles around him for comedic effect. The humor was lost on David. He spent the last four hours of the flight lying on the floor at the back of the plane.

April 28: Indio, California
Carlos: Back in the States at last! I expected Coachella to be this redeeming vindication of our troubles overseas, but, alas, it was not. Instead, we were thrown onto a poorly prepared stage with eager fans, only to bore them with the unprofessional sounds of two attempted songs and tuning guitars. I wanted to behead the guitar tech responsible for this! How embarrassing! The funny thing is that everyone afterward was like, "Great show!" which utterly perplexed me, since all I wanted to do was cry. I think I overmedicated my sorrow when we went back to our hotel in Palm Springs and participated in a friend's blistering after-party, which left me-12 hours later-cracked out by the swimming pool, ordering Heinekens beside vacationing parents and their children swimming around in plastic lifesavers. I looked like a dark angel emerging from the fallen ashes of some soul-stealing post-midnight bonfire ritual.

April 30: Los Angeles
Carlos: Got here and, not having slept at all, passed out in my swank hotel. When I woke up the following morning, I booked another night because, looking around my room, it would have been a mortal sin not to spend more time here at the Hyatt West Hollywood, a.k.a. the "Riot House." I was possessed by the souls of previously fallen band members who succumbed to the party urge between those hallowed walls. I mean, I had a fish tank in my wall for crying out loud! I had to stay!

May 9: New York City
Paul: I have had one fine martini since my return. I am also happy to say that my pool game is intact. Tonight, I was schooling fools with such aplomb that I had to start charging tuition.
Carlos: Home, sweet home! I just got back to New York after a beautiful week in my second-favorite U.S. city, San Francisco, where I walked across the Golden Gate Bridge and soaked up good vibes on Haight Street. I feel like a new man. But what I've come home to is a new smoking ban and a $2 subway ride. I cursed L.A. and S.F. all week for their Draconian smoking laws, and I come back to find my beloved cultural oasis demolished by similarly Hitler-ian circumstances. Damn you, Mayor Bloomberg!!!!

Αδιαμφισβήτητα οι Σκωτσέζοι Mogwai θεωρούνται ένα από τα πιο δυνατά, πρωτότυπα και με μεγάλη επιρροή γκρουπ στο χώρο της post rock σκηνής, μαζί με τους Ισλανδούς Sigur Ros και τους Καναδούς Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Έλλειψη στίχων, καθηλωτικοί ήχοι: οι Mogwai δίνουν στο κοινό τους μια μοναδική αίσθηση, με
τους σκοτεινούς αλλά και έντονα ηλεκτρικούς ήχους τους.

Οι Mogwai επιστρέφουν στην Ελλάδα για δύο βραδιές, στην Θεσσαλονίκη, Παρασκευή 20 Φεβρουαρίου στον Μύλο και στην Αθήνα, Σάββατο 21 Φεβρουαρίου, στο Gagarin 205, για να μας δηλώσουν και ίσως και να μας διδάξουν μία στάση ζωής, αυτή του post rock!

Επηρεασμένοι από τους μεγάλους πατέρες της rock αλλά και post punk σκηνής, όπως οι Joy Division, The Cure, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, The Pixies, Bauhaus, God Machine, Guns 'n' Roses, οι Mogwai δηλώνουν την στάση ζωής τους, δημιουργώντας μεγάλης διάρκειας μουσικές ενότητες και εμπλέκοντας πάντα τη μελωδία με την ηλεκτρική κιθάρα. Οι παραμορφώσεις και τα ειδικά εφέ στον ήχο της κιθάρας δίνουν την μοναδική ταυτότητα της κολεκτίβας από τη Γλασκόβη.

Μουσικές εικόνες και μπερδεμένα ή μάλλον ξεκάθαρα συναισθήματα?... Οι Mogwai προκαλούν και επιστρέφουν πάλι στην Ελλάδα για να μας παρουσιάσουν κομμάτια από το νέο, 6ο στη σειρά, studio album τους, «The Hawk Is Howling», αλλά και κλασσικές επιτυχίες από τις προηγούμενες δουλειές τους όπως «Come On Die Young», «Hunted By A Freak» και «Friend Of The Night».
